Description

Original design by Sue Coleman
Project started: 15-01-2015
Finished: 16-05-2015 (sort of)
Stitched on 25count fabric and hand dyed to a forresty shaded green by moi.
174 x 252 stitches

Well, this project has been a looooong ride for me. Started back in January as a submission for the stitchingpirates contest. And ended up sitting in my project-stash for well over a month while waiting for that single strand of floss I ran out of. Unfortunately for me I thought I would make it with the three strands of black labeled 451 DMC I had in my floss stash. Guess again. :D  Hence the quite visible colour difference in the totem grey cougar. Sadly the newer white labeled DMC strands are quite different in colour so I kind of had to wing it and find the nearest grey colour in my stash to finish my cougar. But hey, happy to frog up my cougar and re-do that bit if/when I do find the right shade of 451 again. Still a bit bummed regardless but luckily you don't really see the difference if you're standing from a distance.

She was a joy to stitch at least and I did make some changes from the original chart, even though one could say I got lazy (I'm definitely not a lazy stitcher mind you!). I left out the greenery behind the cougar as I had already dyed the entire fabric to have the cougar blend in nicely. This way the cougar and his totem version get all the attention it deserves~!

Anywho! Now for the fun facts. This is a lovely conversion from the very talented Sue Coleman who paints mostly American wildlife and so as you can guess the cougar totem in the back of this lovely cougar is Native American art. The cougar is known throughout every civilisation in the Americas and stands for many different things.

Quoting;

'Ancient civilizations held this cryptic cat in high regard. The Puma is a common art motif of the Moche people of Peru. In Inca culture it's related to Viracocha and creation energy. In North America, the Cougar is traditionally sacred to the Cherokee, while in the mythology of some other tribes, it's connected with evil or death.'

 'This big cat is known by many names including cougar, puma, mountain cat, panther and mountain screamer. The Mountain Lion animal spirit brings you strength and courage, honing your natural instincts and sensual mystique. '
