My contest submission for stitchingpirates .

So what I did think of for a piratey fantasy/mythical contest? Right! Mermaids! What better to stitch for such a great idea (I love fantasy!) than one of the most obvious pirates nemesis/happy drowning dooms. And I had just the pattern stashed away for it as well. I do so love Nora Corbett's designs! All of her designs are just so graceful and real easy to follow.

The fabric I wanted to be something watery so I hopped on over to polstitchesdesigns.co.uk and went on a scavenging hunt, arrrr! Until I found the perfect piece of fabric for my graceful mermaid. Which I did, and what a delight it was to stitch on, the lovely green and blue tones of the fabric really motivated me to get that missy stitched onto it!
I also managed to scavenge the seahorse and seashell charms from a local store which aren't part of the pattern but I thought would be an excellent fit to her.

As for the lore of mermaids; they are a part of just about any folklore in some way or another, with the oldest reported stories of mermaids going back 2000 BC in Babylonian times. So as you can imagine, there have been many many many stories and sightings of mermaids! Some as benevolent creatures, others...well...not all of them were as sweet as Disney's Ariel, shall we say? And these ladies sure got around the world! From the Celtic and European countries in the North to African culture down in the South to the Asian countries in the East.

A small copy/paste from Wikipedia says;

A mermaid is a legendary aquatic creature with the upper body of a female human and the tail of a fish Mermaids appear in the folklore of many cultures worldwide, including the Near East, Europe, Africa and Asia. The first stories appeared in ancient Assyria in which the goddess Atargatis transformed herself into a mermaid out of shame for accidentally killing her human lover. Mermaids are sometimes associated with perilous events such as floods, storms, shipwrecks and drownings. In other folk traditions (or sometimes within the same tradition), they can be benevolent or beneficent, bestowing boons or falling in love with humans.

There you have it; a lovely representation of a (good natured) mermaid that I enjoyed stitching very much! She will be such a delight once I have the funds to have her properly framed by a proffessional framer. It will be worth the money, no doubt!
